Hey everyone, I’ve dealt with Intel i9 problems with the 14th generation and had to replace my CPU. This isn’t the main point, but while I was working on it, I noticed some cracking or peeling in the paste and a small gap. The cooling solution got a bit too bulky, so I might trim it down a bit but still get decent coverage. I’m curious what you think about the pattern—seems like overheating, though I’m just guessing based on limited info. From what I know, some cores throttled more than others, probably near the bare area. What do you all think? Any tips for the new CPU with a contact frame?

The bare spot certainly isn't ideal, but I wouldn't read anything into the pattern. That's simply the result of pulling apart two surfaces connected by a viscous liquid.

It makes sense because it isolates the issue. Just confirming the cracks weren’t caused by heating. The Intel voltage adjustments seemed to be trying to damage the device. Fingers crossed the updated BIOS protects it. I’ll switch to Team Red next time.

Address the issue by updating the BIOS to the newest release. Doing so now is preferable since it’s too late otherwise.

An article on overclockers.com suggested using a razor blade to spread thermal paste. The writer also talked about the idea with engineers at Arctic Silver.

The concept is that you shouldn't rely on waterblocks or heatsinks to spread thermal paste uniformly and sparingly for best results. Instead, use a tool to coat the entire die with a very thin and even layer. Likely people now use plastic materials for this purpose.
