Take a pic of the cable you think it is and post both ends to us here, this will help greatly. If there's writing on the ends be sure to show those as well.

Have you verified that the 8-pin CPU connector is properly attached on the motherboard?
I’m not certain if someone assembled my PC, but I think they did.
These connections need to be linked to the PSU for overclocking, covering both the 4-pin and 8-pin types.
Oh man, there seems to be only an 8-pin connector—why isn’t the 4-pin one present? Can I install it myself? And where can I find a 4-pin cable?
Your PSU should include a 4-pin connector. Align it correctly; you’ll see a clip that snaps onto the outside. It fits only in one orientation.
If you’re unsure, take a photo and we’ll confirm if it’s positioned right.
Check the images above—there aren’t any 4-pin connectors, I searched for them but couldn’t find any, just 6+2 or 8 pins.
Remove the 8-pin connector if it's actually a 2x4 pin configuration. Link it with the 4-pin and apply a 6+2 pin arrangement for the 8-pin version.
Adjust the 8-pin connector by removing the 8-pin version and using a 2x4 pin. If that works, link it to the 4-pin and apply a 6+2 configuration for the 8-pin. I discovered a 2x4 pin connector and connected the 8-pin to the PSU, while keeping the other side as a 4+4 pin in the motherboard. I left the first 4-pin cable in the 4-pin connector on the board and used the remaining one as is. When trying to overclock, it still didn't succeed.
Did you verify the 8-pin CPU connector on the motherboard? That's an important point. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that one of the CPU plugs wasn't securely connected, and it wasn't until I tried to apply voltage through the CPU that issues started occurring.
