It doesn't need to. FO4 could reference earlier works like FO3 and others in the series, though it occurs in a new setting, which should work.

It's not essential, especially since FO4 is near. You won't have time to finish 3 or NV before 4 arrives. They're separate; just play 4 when it's time, and maybe save 3 for later. They're still solid games, I've played both extensively (around 100 hours each).

It's easy to finish the games in a short time by focusing on story missions. I think the OP wouldn't have struggled much before the release of FO4.

You might finish the primary storyline in just a few hours, yet most players would likely overlook the rest of the game. The main campaigns are solid by themselves, but it’s unclear how simple it would be for someone new to jump right past everything.

It was very simple for my brother to finish the game on his initial attempt within a few hours. He also replayed it before the DLC added significant time to the experience.
