The approach is to play numerous smaller games and set the bid just below the top value. If it fails within 3 hours, raise the bid and retry.
Valve seems to be expecting a huge number of gems for some auctions, which is hard to believe with only about 1300 gems on hand.
Space Hulk: Ascension and Culpa Innata were titles I considered for my collection, spending roughly $6 to gather some gems. Early in the event I bought around 500 tiny backgrounds costing just $0.01 each, totaling about 80 gems. I still have a few left, but the rest of my list isn’t available. I really wished for Mordheim a lot.

I believe I paid too much for Toy-Box Turbos (5k). That was the only game I truly wanted. Given that 1k gems is about $0.50, I spent $2.50 for it. Maybe I could have saved a bit more.
