Hey there, I’ve been trying to wrap my head around PCIe lanes lately. To be honest, I’ve never really dealt with something like this before until now. From what I understand, a Ryzen 5 2600 has 20 PCIe lanes—about 16 for the GPU and 4 left over. That means a M.2 NVMe could use all four, leaving nothing for the old SSDs. I remember getting confused when I bought an M.2 SSD myself; it seemed like it should have taken one lane, but then I realized SATA SSDs only use one lane. So if I’m out, I can’t recognize them anymore. I’ve already stopped using M.2 in my system and am sticking with SATA, which works fine for me. Now I’m thinking about adding a 1TB M.2 SSD with an HDD to my sister’s new PC. Can I still expand storage later if needed, or is that the maximum capacity I have?
The situation isn't clear, but I doubt a SATA SSD is necessary.

The Ryzen 2600 features 24 PCIe lanes. About 16 lanes are reserved for video cards, while the remaining may be divided into two PCIe x8 slots based on the motherboard's chipset. Four lanes are allocated for the M.2 connector, though manufacturers aren't required to use them in that way—most do. Four lanes connect the chipset to the processor, which is already their purpose. The chipset includes various USB controllers, SATA controllers, and a PCIe controller that adds more lanes. For instance, the B450 chipset provides 6 PCIe 2.0 lanes, which can be extended to additional M.2 controllers, extra x4 slots, or multiple x1 slots. The B550 chipset enhances the PCIe controller to support up to 10 PCIe 3.0 lanes. The M.2 slot can accommodate NVMe SSDs and AHCI SATA drives, but wiring must be checked in the manual to ensure compatibility when using M.2 devices, especially if switching between SATA and NVMe connections.
According to the instructions, ports 5 and 6 are turned off because of the M.2 device, but you can keep using ports 1 through 4.
