i need to set up my drive with two partitions: one with 40gb in FAT-32 format and another left as unallocated. why? because my nintendo 3ds runs well with less than 40gb, and extra empty space speeds up boot time. i prefer that over a larger card since it costs more and might be fake. i don’t want to waste space just for storage. i’m not sure if a 64gb card would help or not. i’m stuck using a 256gb sd card that’s already occupied by other things, and it doesn’t perform as well. i’ve tried deleting the volume in windows, but macos doesn’t let me do that easily. reddit gave no help, most said i should buy another card. some apps claimed they could fix it, but none let me resize fat32 drives or free up space. i’m close to getting my old laptop, but i’d like a mac solution too.
No prior knowledge of macOS, so others may offer guidance. Depending on your MacBook model, creating a live GParted image and booting into it could work. Alternatively, using any live Linux distribution might simplify the process since they often include partitioning tools. It seems easier than installing a full Windows setup. Note: There are concerns about leaving space unallocated preventing device scanning, though this may not be accurate. Some users report faster boot times after formatting 256GB drives with a 64KB cluster on fat32. You might try that as well.
Thanks for the assistance! I ended up opting for an older, dusty Windows laptop to accomplish the task.
