It depends on the intended purpose of the board. Strong VRM and heatsinks are usually present, giving room for future CPU upgrades. If the system is likely to run a 6-core processor or less, I can opt for better value by trading VRM quality. The PCIe slot arrangement should allow most E/S devices to stay functional even with a larger video card installed. I don’t mind minor sound limitations—avoiding expensive DACs and premium gear. A solid 5.1 speaker setup is enough. Whenever possible, I favor boards with 5-6 analog outputs so I can connect multiple audio jacks without issues. Optical or coaxial connections are nice but rarely used. I pay attention to the number of SATA ports and how many remain usable for M.2 SSDs; some boards cut off two ports when an NVMe drive is added, redirecting one to M.2. The motherboard’s USB headers and rear ports matter too—especially if you want extra USB 3 ports on the front. I prefer boards with at least two USB 3 ports for peripherals, while keeping USB 2 ports for keyboards and mice. Having a few extra RAM slots is nice, but it’s becoming less critical now since 16GB or 32GB sticks are common. If this is for a server or office setup with integrated graphics, I want boards that support VGA or DVI-I (not just DVI-D). Features like BIOS flashback are valuable, letting you update BIOS without a CPU by using a USB drive to store the file. This can help if the BIOS becomes corrupted.
