The game likely simply mentioned YOLO and combined the video data from both cards.

Even at 1440P resolution, I don’t think a game would fit on just 8GB of VRAM. I believe the halving of numbers will help here. The game treats VRAM as 8GB, but both cards share the same data in memory. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be able to implement this with today’s available APIs.

Just to clear things up, but it seems the system only combines the two cards together, yet you can still manage just 4GB due to the rules around storage.

It wasn't correct. GTA IV handled the same crossfire setup as before many years ago.

Not stackable, they form a kind of raid. All current cards on one card are reflected on another.
