I've kept my motherboard unchanged for six years without updating the BIOS, and everything worked fine. Recently, someone suggested an update from Corsair, but I haven’t needed it yet. It seems straightforward—just download the .exe and run it—but I’m unsure if it’s truly necessary. Would updating the BIOS be a regular task whenever new versions are released?
I faced problems with my z690 and didn’t know they could be resolved via a BIOS update. Usually it takes around a year to fix all the minor issues, after which updates become less frequent. I tend to update only when necessary. My work laptop is affected by bugs from my IT team. The USB ports stop working every month. I refresh the BIOS drivers monthly on that device and the ports seem to recover. As needed.
For all recent CPUs and boards you must update the BIOS for a minimum of a year to ensure stability and performance. Upgrading to newer processors is also recommended when feasible, though it won’t be possible with LGA1700 since Intel plans to modify the chipset on future generations. It’s quite straightforward in the BIOS—just install the new version and click the button
I refresh my system upon initial setup, then only if needed to address specific issues. BIOS seems to reflect a mindset of fixing what isn't working properly.
Updates to bios typically resolve existing problems. I prefer the newest bios unless the older version has known issues.
I modify the BIOS just when necessary... Addressing problems I face, adding a recently compatible CPU, etc. Otherwise, I keep it unchanged.
I only changed bios a handful of times over these years. Once on my brother’s Z97M because of a visual glitch that made bios unusable, I updated to resolve it. Once on my ThinkPad T420 before upgrading to a quad-core processor… which actually blocked it from using quadcore. I managed to flash a version that worked with quadcore, but I shouldn’t have bothered updating and just ran the default. Four times on my current B550M TUF gaming rig. The first was for 5000 support at launch, the second to fix a VGA problem when getting my 3070 after 10 months, the third to support my 5800X3D a week ago, and the fourth another week later because ASUS added support for Curve Optimizer in the BIOS for the 5800X3D. All these changes were due to problems with existing bios or new features/hardware. If you don’t have an issue, it’s probably not worth updating. Maybe older AMD boards before 2021 are more stable with faster memory on newer BIOS versions… but you’d likely notice issues already. My 3600MHz Cl16 has run perfectly since the Ryzen 5000 launch, so I never needed an update until the small VGA issue popped up.
