I suspect these issues stem from software problems or a malfunctioning GPU. I’m not sure what’s going on. Problems: Java programs and games often terminate unexpectedly because of a JVM crash, especially related to the OldSchool RuneScape container. Every month, my PC freezes intermittently for about five seconds. DWM.exe stops working unpredictably during Overwatch sessions, and both monitors go dark. I can still hear Discord but can’t interact. Event viewer shows DWM.exe repeatedly failing to restart, and it’s been attempted up to eight times. Occasionally, minor visual glitches appear on the BIOS screen, disappearing once I switch to Windows. Monitor issues are unusual—my main display only works at 144Hz or lower until I restart. I’ve tried several fixes: swapping GPU power cables, re-seating the card, cleaning the PC, using updated drivers with DDU, upgrading to Windows 11, and even running a full system scan. NVENC/RTX background apps were disabled, performance mode set to maximum, BIOS updated, and stress tests completed without errors. I’ve also removed any background applications using NVENC or RTX cores like GeForce Experience and Broadcast. Memory tests with MemTest86 passed. I changed my settings to use full performance and ran virus scans. No crashes during FurMark tests. System specs: Ryzen 5600X, 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB, Gigabyte RTX 3070, Gigabyte B550M DS3H, Windows 11 Home (previously Windows 10).
After upgrading to Windows 11, did you perform a complete reinstall or simply upgrade? For problems like this, consider reinstalling Windows from scratch if you haven’t done so already.
Are those special moments when your computer hasn’t been running for a while and you jump into BIOS? It might be a bad GPU, I’ve noticed it freezing up when cold and then getting stable as it warms up. Still, those kinds of issues usually happen after a few months, and yours has been working well for a long time before that started.
These items usually appear after forcing a shutdown because of a DWM.exe crash or strange system behavior. The Gigabyte BIOS display often shows odd boxes or blue dotted lines. I’ve owned this GPU for around two years and haven’t been doing any mining.
Since this install is only a few months old, and I've not had any concrete answers yet, I'll see if I can ask a friend to borrow an old GPU. If that doesn't fix it, then I'll do a clean install.
Then the situation isn't what I expected... It might still connect to heat, especially the shift from extremely hot to cool. But it lasts about 20 minutes in Furmark. If you want more insight, try moving from Furmark to a cooler environment, then quickly lower the temperature using fans at full power, and repeat a few times. Watch for any signs of artifacts while the system is running. This process will really stress your GPU—don't suggest it if the warranty isn't active. Speaking about the warranty, I'm considering taking photos and sending it back for replacement (RMA). That seems sensible. I was thinking about testing with a live Linux distribution, but those symptoms are hard to recreate in just an hour or two. The Java component might be easier to test, though it could point to a different issue unrelated to your GPU.
Have you explored using the main PCIe 16x port at version 3.0 or testing another slot? The board and CPU should handle version 4.0, though this depends on your budget model B550.
I've recorded and tracked the GPU temperatures, everything seems normal so far—nothing worth mentioning. It looks like it's only slightly under warranty, though it's unclear how much help Gigabyte might provide. At this stage, it's tough to separate what's causing issues, but the signs are really serious.
