Hello everyone, I'm testing 4K gaming with just one GTX 980 and an i7 5820K. Could you share your CPU and GPU details along with the frame rates you achieve in the most intense games? If you're playing World of Warcraft, Team Fortress, League of Legends, Dota 2, GW2, Warframe, Left 4 Dead 2 or any of the earlier Assassin's Creed titles, please mention your 4K performance as well.

Alternatively, we might opt for a firemark.

You're experiencing a significant performance gap between your gaming setup and other applications. That's quite surprising given your hardware.

Few users have 4K screens, but you can run a 4K benchmark in FireMark. That’s a helpful tip.

WhiteSkyMage uses a 3570k & R9 270 monitor with Assetto Corsa running at medium-ultra. Frame rates range from 60 to 90fps on Dirt 3 ultra with ambient collision off and shadows enabled in Skyrim. In Skyrim, 50-60fps is achievable at high settings, while LoL reaches up to 150-250 maxed. GTA 4 gives around 40fps with a mix of low and high settings. Metro 2033 runs at 3-4fps in 4K, likely due to VRAM limits, but about 35-55fps at 1440p. BF4 Medium averages 35-50fps, sometimes dropping slightly at higher resolutions.

You’ll need another 980 to hit higher frame rates with solid configurations. Alternatively, you can stick to 1440p for a balanced approach.

Thanks! Have you explored WoW on Max with 4K settings? Trying BF4 at max too will give you an idea... Don’t worry, G-Sync is available. As long as I keep around 30 FPS at 4K, everything should work. I sometimes go down to 1440p for Crysis 3... But I have plenty of games left before I start Crysis 3, so by then I’ll likely have two GTX 980 graphics cards, each with 8GB of memory.

Not hitting 4k atm yet – but I’m planning an upgrade in about six months. I’m keeping an eye on this discussion. FYI (I’ll keep it short): I own an older setup (around 2010) with a Socket 1366 GA-X58A-UD3R, back when you could boost any CPU by tweaking its bus speed. I originally had an i7-930 and a GTX 460 SE (not great), and I was playing WoW, but I lost interest soon after setting up my new rig. In 2013 I fixed the Skyrim issue and moved to a GTX 660 ti. However, I got too involved with mods and tweaks, which eventually wore me out. By 2014 I wanted better efficiency. I upgraded my BIOS to run a Xeon L5640 (6 cores at 60W, now a common find on eBay), set it to 3.07 GHz with stock voltages and an 160MHz FSB. Added a PNY GTX 750 TI (OC version) and a new low-power 27" IPS screen – now I’m smoothing 60fps for Folding@home (my monitor only handles 60Hz, so I’m pretty sure that’s the spec). I’ll likely stay at this level until affordable 4k 3D graphics become a reality. To cut my electricity costs, I’m considering upgrading my UPS to be more solar-friendly, but so far I haven’t found anyone who’s already done that.
