I built an MSI B350M Mortar with a Ryzen 7 1700 processor. It comes with a stock cooler and a case that has some ventilation. I haven’t felt any heat coming from the exhaust fans, which seems odd. My decisions have been questionable lately.
According to the title, I might have accidentally updated the BIOS while enabling "Game Boost" and "XMP." That setting increased my clock speeds to 3.4GHz, but it also raised the temperatures to 80-90°C. After the BIOS update, my clocks returned to normal (1.2GHz idle, 3.0 base, 3.2 on load), but the temperatures remained high—around 45°C at 1.2GHz and 85°C at 3.2GHz.
What’s unusual is that I’ve never experienced such high temperatures before. The best performance I’ve seen was 75°C during heavy tasks, now it reaches 90°C after just five minutes of full load.
I’m curious if someone could clarify what happened. Did I make a mistake? How can I reset everything properly?
I’ve noticed others overclocking the R7 1700 to 3.8GHz with the stock cooler without issues. Is my thermal paste working correctly, or is it the motherboard’s heat management that’s failing?
