I connected the fan headers but the PC operates normally.
Accidentally damaged my fan hub by connecting it incorrectly from the PSU to the fan hub, then to the fan hub, and finally to the motherboard and data header. Smoke appeared and wires showed visible tears, but the system is running normally. I’m unsure which chassis header was affected since both fan1 and 2 were used before the issue. I’ve stress tested the GPU and CPU without problems, but I’m worried about replacing the motherboard or PSU. I think swapping the PSU is the best option and stopping use of the case fans. There are no burn marks on the motherboard, though SATA cables show some damage. The 4-pin connector from the fan header to the hub has visible wear, and one fan cable shows signs of damage. With the specs listed—ASRock X870 Steel Legend, 9070X Saphire Pulse GPU, 9800X3D CPU, 32GB RAM, 6000MHz DDR5, dual 2TB G.Skill drives, and a Samsung EVO SSD—I’m unsure if the fan headers will still function properly or if replacing the motherboard is necessary.
You're connecting devices to the board while the system is active because it allows you to monitor or adjust settings during operation.
It seems like you're suggesting something isn't a good idea. Would you like to discuss it further?
Maybe I'll take my mobile to a computer repair place to see if it works, just in case I accidentally connect other fans to the connector.
The fans can be checked using a suitable power source. If you're not familiar with electronics, it might be safer to take them to a repair shop. Regarding the melted plastic, it indicates the wires reached high enough temperatures to melt their insulation. The wires are likely intact, though the insulation could be a hazard if the metal becomes exposed. For damaged electronics, since you acted quickly to cut off the short circuit, your parts should still be in good condition. I appreciate your caution—good luck!
