I have an outdated IBM ThinkPad R52 with Windows XP Professional installed as a spare unit. I observed the hard drive failing as the laptop slowed down and produced strange clicking noises. Everything functioned normally until then, so I used Macrium Reflect to create an image of the drive and replaced it with a new one. Shortly after, the new drive stopped working entirely. After restoring the image, the laptop started but remained sluggish. I considered using IBM Rescue & Recovery to reset the system to factory settings. I rebooted and accessed the recovery mode via F11, which displayed an error stating 'Missing Operating System.' While the backup files were accessible, the computer couldn’t locate them during startup. Assistance needed!

If the hard drive is faulty, it's likely the damaged section was causing data loss. You can start fresh by installing a new operating system and rebuilding the partition. Avoid using XP; consider trying a lightweight Linux distribution instead.
