I won't say anything new here but i felt i have to throw it out there. Let me start from saying i love RTS and strategies in general, even thou i fucking suck at them. Never modded any games except Fallout 4 to make it for my taste. Ever since i discovered unification mod for Dawn of War 1 i feel dead inside playing the vanilla game. There's so much autenthic and quality things in it. It was baffling for me that a group of wannabe modders made something 10times better then developers work. The Age of the Rings for Battle for the middle earth 2 or Rise of Reds for CnC Generals. It's like i discovered a whole new level in these games. I playing them like crazy now.

For another engaging RTS experience, try Empire at War with the Remake version—it's really enjoyable.

i feel the same way with vr games. the mods are often better, and with more to do, than the base games. at least imo

Another title where modifications became the standard: Company of Heroes with the "Blitzkrieg Mod". It completely transforms the gameplay experience, offering a far more balanced and superior version. This enhancement is so impressive that even the official Company of Heroes 2 falls short. The mod for Company of Heroes 2 is arguably unmatched by anything else. Mods represent one of the greatest aspects of PC gaming, with no other game improving it. They empower players to shape the game in their direction, rather than imposing a vision from outside. Similar success is seen in Skyrim and Fallout 4. The developers will struggle to create better versions in these series since the community already provides everything desired through countless mods.
