Hi! It sounds like you're trying to set up a good network setup for your new home. You have a router upstairs that connects directly to the back of the router, but you need more Ethernet ports and stronger WiFi coverage in your gaming/computer room. You're considering whether to use a switch or a different router as a repeater. It might be worth looking into a dedicated network switch to manage all your devices efficiently, while keeping WiFi functional if possible. Alternatively, using a second router with better range could work well too. Just check what your devices support and what your budget allows.

I'll set up a switch and check the WiFi signal strength. If it's weak, you can view a wireless access point or connect using a router in AP mode.

Based on my observations, an affordable gigabit LAN/WAN router works well as a switch. Using two routers in series provides ample LAN ports. If possible, opt for Cat 6 or 7 cables for 10 gigabit speeds later.

Yes, it works though it isn't ideal. You might face a double NAT problem if you're not configured correctly. The safest option is to set up a switch upstairs and an AP. There are POE switches available that can power an AP, allowing you to place it in a closet or another convenient spot.

You should install a switch, attach an AP, and this will provide both Wi-Fi and LAN with optimal stability.

It's the most dependable confirmation. This allows flexibility since you're not limited by the number of ports routers offer, and you can position the AP where it best receives signals instead of being confined to the Switch's location. Ubiquiti provides devices that can be mounted on ceilings, for instance.
