4X mode refers to a compact, short slot within a lengthy PCI-E port. It allows you to fit an M.2 x4 SSD into the same space.

Supports 3.0 4x cards and auto-detects expansion modules. The second slot remains limited to Gen 3.0 regardless of standard PCI-E cards.
