I can handle multiple devices simultaneously.
I set up a Freenas server that hosts cloud services and emby. Emby lets me stream my live TV, and I’m connected via HDhomerun Prime to emby so I can watch up to three streams simultaneously from any device. My cable card costs $5 a month, which is cheaper than buying three setup boxes from my provider. The Chromecast works perfectly with the emby app on my smartphone or tablet. With the Chromecast, I can display live TV anywhere in my home. The main concern is whether multiple Chromecasts streaming live TV from the server would cause slow Wi-Fi speeds. Since the video is 1080p, I need to know how to test this before buying more than one Chromecast.
What is the make and model of your wireless router or access point? How close are your Chromecasts to the router? Are there any obstacles like walls, floors, or other objects between the router and the Chromecasts, including behind your TV? You can test both 2.4G and 5G networks, though 5G offers more bandwidth. Keep in mind that it performs better through solid objects but has a shorter range. How many wireless devices are connected simultaneously? What speed do you currently pay for via your ISP? There are additional factors to consider, but this provides a solid foundation. One method to evaluate streaming multiple video streams is by using a Chromecast alongside a couple of laptops to stream from your NAS server and observe the performance. Remember, Chromecasts have different wireless capabilities compared to a laptop or smartphone, which can help you gauge whether it will work effectively.
It wasn't something I thought about much. The placement of the router isn't a big problem since it's in the center of the house and only one wall blocks the line of sight, except perhaps in a small area. I'm also planning to use 5G and can test it with your suggestion. I'll gather some devices and try streaming as many as possible. I'm paying $75 per Mbps up and down with Verizon. Appreciate the help!
