You're weighing whether to replace everything or just upgrade your CPU. Since your current setup uses DDR3 RAM, you might need to consider a new motherboard and possibly a different CPU type. The LGA 1155 socket is outdated, so a modern socket like AM4 or BGA would be better for future upgrades. If you're on a tight budget, focusing on the CPU could save money while still improving performance.

I recommend upgrading to a new CPU. You'll be amazed at how much hyper-threading benefits certain tasks. The i7-3770 offers solid performance. If you're looking for a fresh start, expect to spend about $200 on a decent option (like the Ryzen 3 1200AF with a 3200mhz dual-channel DDR4). The Ryzen 3 1200AF is more affordable than the 3100 due to current market conditions.

I’m trying to figure out what I need right now. Since I don’t have a clear budget or options, I’m only able to buy a CPU for my old board or a motherboard with some RAM. I’m a student and I’m in the final months of an internship, so I won’t get paid soon. I just want something functional until I find another job. My English isn’t great, so I hope this makes sense.

Search for a 3770 and a budget 2x8 gig stick. For more options, consider a used Z68 board or a cheaper H61 board if needed.

Do you believe it might be possible? I have very limited old RAM (8 GB DDR3) and worry about hitting a bottleneck if I upgrade my CPU. A new CPU might help, but upgrading RAM is tough because DDR3 is costly right now. I’m stuck in this situation here in Brazil, and I can only really afford the CPU and motherboard you mentioned—it’s really tight.

Don't stress about your English—it's okay! With a limited budget, I'd opt for a CPU upgrade just to keep things going. Even factoring in selling your old parts, it looks like you're planning to build something better with newer components yourself.

So basically, getting a new CPU seems like the safest choice. While 8GB of RAM isn’t perfect, it’s still working fine for most games. The only complaints I’ve heard about that spec are from Star Citizen and some modified Minecraft runs.
