For online games, Ping takes precedence over upload/download speed. I’d check local ISPs to find the most dependable option for your main use. Speed matters less than how quickly you need it and how long you’re willing to wait. I’d choose a plan that fits my budget. Paying extra just because someone suggests it might not be worth it if the monthly cost isn’t appealing.
Based on the ISP, they may restrict your ability to modify their gear and might not bill you for it. AT&T, for instance, doesn't charge me and I'm required to use their router, though I can switch it to bridge or bypass mode. Spectrum provides a modem at no cost.
Cox offers a different rate, $10 per month regardless of returning their gear or using yours. Expect changes coming next year once the rule that prevents this is implemented, but currently prices may differ between providers.
Also, avoid being lured by the initial "NEW" customer rates; consider the costs after a year or two.
I have Xfinity and we operate our own modem without any charges from them!
