I’d choose the 32GB pair, particularly if you intend to keep this laptop in use for the near future. Combining DIMMs of varying sizes might limit dual-channel operation or restrict the dual-channel bandwidth to only what all DIMMs support. Plus, unless you’re regularly utilizing the full 16GB you already have, extra RAM won’t significantly boost performance.

Support for various modules can be challenging, but we've noticed significant enhancements in DDR4 RAM, enabling systems to operate in dual channel with full capacity. However, there will always be higher CPU usage since the system must manage data locations and balance loads across modules. Running two separate kits may lead to problems because of differing timing and latency. Ideally, it's best to use two sticks from the same kit with matching capacity.
