Hello, welcome! You're excited about your new 1 gigabit connection and have some questions about choosing a router. The Hitron Coda 4582 is decent for basic use, but if you're looking for better performance—especially for gaming—it might be worth considering an Asus ROG AC5300. It offers improved speed, stability, and features that can enhance your online experience. Let me know if you need more details!

Wow, 1000 Gigabit... I think you meant 1Gigabit. Still, the ASUS router likely has a much quicker CPU, lots of antennas (though I’d suggest separate WiFi access points if you need to cover a bigger space), and good router software. How many devices will you have? And do you use the network a lot? You probably don’t need QoS for such a fast home connection.

Thanks for the message! I appreciate you letting me know about your setup. I do have several devices—primarily phones, a tablet or two, and a laptop, plus my desktop. If you get the AC5300, it should fully replace the Hitron? Also, just a note, I play games quite a lot.

The Hitron functions as a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, so you'll need it for your connection. You may need to disable most settings or try using bridge mode to connect another router more easily. It might be worth checking its performance; if it lacks features or doesn’t meet your needs, consider purchasing an alternative like the Asus AC5300 later. Edit: If you planned a full replacement, you’d require an approved DOCSIS 3.1 modem from your ISP, which usually lists supported devices or confirms compatibility with standalone models.

Hey Lurick, it's been a while! How are you? Also, I was thinking about unplugging the Hitron and connecting it to the AC5300.

Been good, how about you? Unfortunately not unless you buy a separate modem since the AC5300 lacks coax input

Great to hear from you! Any suggestions you have? A 2-in-1 option sounds appealing. Let’s skip the price worries for now.

After some research, it seems Rogers won't allow you to bring your own modem, which is confusing. The policy also changes depending on the region, making it difficult to confirm. I’d reach out and ask if a device like the SB8200 would work, but they’re ultimately in control.

In the ideal situation, purchasing your own modem would be best, though it's unlikely they'll allow that. You'd need to switch the combo into bridge mode and see if it works. As alternatives, consider Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4 or the AC-Pros Wallet; both can work with Ubiquiti Edgerouter Infinity and AC-HDs Open Source solutions. You could also repurpose an old PC or install a Netgate router with pFsense (or untangle) and pair it with AC Pros.
