Hello everyone, I’m getting ready to build my own PC and I’d really appreciate some guidance on hardware and software setup. Since I’m still learning how to assemble a system, I want to make sure I handle everything carefully so I don’t lose anything important.
Q1. If I finish setting up the BIOS and move my old HDD with the OS inside, will it start up normally?
Q2. Should I install a new M.2 drive and Windows before moving my old HDD, or should I keep using the old HDD? After that, can I format the old HDD and then switch to the new M.2?
Q3. My data on the old SSD will stay after transferring it to the new computer? If yes, how do I make Windows recognize it?
Q4. What’s the best way to clone my OS onto a new M.2 drive? Is it safe? And if so, should I get free Windows keys or is a fresh install better?

The system should start without issues as long as you point the boot device to the HDD. It may require a bit of tweaking but you might need to reinstall Windows and choose to keep files. Q2 – Switching to an M.2 drive also works, just be sure to clear Windows files to prevent problems. Q3 – Upgrading old drives with existing data can be tricky, but a helpful YouTube tutorial can simplify the process. Q4 – EASE US should handle cloning well; a fresh Windows setup usually runs smoother. I’ve used it before, and getting Windows keys from G2A has helped me too. Hope this assists!
When you need to switch keys after upgrading, first launch the operating system and check if it shows you lack an active key. Navigate to profile settings and look just below your account details—there should be a blue note like "I recently upgraded my PC." Choose that option and follow the instructions; if your previous key was valid, it will appear in the list. Pick it and it should link your old hardware to the new one. I used this method with my November build and saved money by avoiding a new purchase.
