Consumer x99 manages the compatible versions of xeons, I believe the same applies to the earlier HEDT motherboards.

It mentions the E7 8880 V3 is LGA2011, though I’m unsure if it was X79 because 2011 featured several generations.

I'm starting to understand this now. It seems not every 2011 socket is the same. The evidence points toward E7s only fitting with multi-socket server equipment. I reached out to Super Micro to check for single-socket options that could work. I'll share any further details I gather. 2011 sockets come in different versions like V1 through V4. As long as the design supports it, a compatible chip can work. You should use a 2011-3 socket board, which is also known as 2011 V3.

You have an x99 board. I'm checking if the e7 will fit. The pin contacts match a 6950x slightly differently, and the bottom capacitors vary a lot. e7-8880v3 with i7-6950x

It's the same electrical connection, but the CPU-to-CPU bus pins aren't linked. The caps vary since the chips are made of different materials and are bigger.
