My computer was running smoothly until I connected the Ethernet cable and sat down. It shut off instantly. When I tried to power it back on, only the hard drives spun and the case fans started since they’re driven by my PSU, but everything else remains unresponsive. What’s going wrong? The specs are: Intel Xeon E5-2670 v1, random motherboard from Amazon, DDR3 2666 MHz RAM, 8 GB GDDR3, GTX 950, EVGA SC+ graphics, 600W PSU, SSD and HDDs.

It seems unusual. You probably attempted to power it on without connecting the Ethernet cable. If that's the case, try again. Are there any diagnostic indicators on the motherboard? Look for any lights indicating issues.

Umm yes I did try without the ethernet cord plugged in and the motherboard did nothing. Yeah when I turn it on its like the motherboard is dead and is not getting any power, there's no lights. Ooh it did something. The cpu cooler light just turned on and everything is now on, but nothings happening. Normally when I turn on my pc it beeps as it boots but nothing and no display either.

You're wondering about the CMOS battery on your motherboard and whether it might affect your data. It seems like it's similar to a small coin cell. You mentioned drives in RAID or special setups, which could be at risk if reset. Make sure you're confident before proceeding.

Consider checking if you've completed all the steps mentioned. It could be helpful to begin there.
