So I recently purchased a used 12700K , which didn't show any signs of defect on the outside and I also tested it using the Intel Processor Diagnostics Tool, which it passed without issue and therefore I bought it. But I am noticing now (in Intel Extreme Tuning Utility) that clock speeds aren't reaching the target boost speeds of 5 Ghz, they usually hover around 4.7 Ghz under load (sometimes even lower). The CPU isn't thermal nor power throttling (max temperature is 75 degrees). I have made sure that the boost clocks were set correctly in the BIOS (Asrock b660 pro RS mobo). The score I get in Cinebench is 20k, which is lower than someone else's 22k score. When idle 5 Ghz is reached (but still jumps up and down), but as soon as load is set on it, the CPU clocks down for no apparent reason. I did remove the plastic sticker off the AIO Cooler and made sure to put a big glob of Thermal Grizzly thermal paste on er'. Temps and clock speeds at idle Temps and clock speeds under load (ETU benchmark, ik, not the best, but just for the sake of evidence) No hot spots Have I made a mistake buying a B660 chipset mobo and should instead go for a Z690? (I know overclocking is not enabled in B660, forgot about that when buying, but asking if there is any reason other than that.) Or could the PSU be outdated? It is a Silverstone 700W PSU bought in 2018. https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/produc...70F-ES230/ I upgraded from a Gigabyte Z370P D3 and 8700K and there were no such issues there. Specs: -i7 12700K -ASrock B660 Pro RS -Silverstone 700W PSU -Asus TUF 4080 -Silent Loop 2 240mm -32 Gb 3600 Balistix (2x16Gb) Any help would be appreciated!

In a live gaming scenario (BeamNG Drive is an example, but similar problems appear in other titles), the stress test was conducted during the ETU phase.

Turbo Boost 3.0 delivers a 5.0 ghz increase and typically uses just one or two cores. It's typical for performance to dip slightly when running with all cores active.

Yeah, but when the 5Ghz boost is on, the two chosen cores don't reach 5Ghz. According to HWM, max they get up to is 4,89. Dunno, maybe its just me with the new kinda CPU's with the P and E cores, cuz with my 8700K even on a 5Ghz Overclock on all cores, the clock speeds were very stable, very little deviation from 5Ghz. But the clocks jump around a lot I feel like. I am thinking of returning this mobo and getting a Z690 chipset one.

You have multiple cores available, and the workload exceeds one or two cores. Running Cinnebench in single-core mode would yield 5.0? Is there an oversight here? 5.0 GHz on a 12.7 GHz processor should only be suitable for single or dual-core tasks?

The chip should run at 4.9GHz on all cores. However, the motherboard tends to overheat under heavy use and may reduce performance to avoid damage. It seems like the issue might be related to thermal management rather than power throttling. I’ve checked if that’s confirmed. If you’re considering swapping to a different board, like another B660 model, it could provide a noticeable boost. Keep in mind the limitations of Z-series chipsets for overclocking, though some unexpected results can occur with undervolting.

It performed well at 5Ghz in single core mode on Cinebench. Appreciate your assistance!

Could have explored more options, really. Thanks a lot! I’ll definitely consider swapping the mobo then—it was clearly the worst choice.
