I believe a Firefox extension—or maybe another service—is inserting its own advertisements into YouTube. Recently, I've encountered some suspicious ads about dating platforms and driver updates that seem to be Google AdSense. My Google ad settings don't reflect anything related to computers, software, programming, or consumer electronics for the "ads on Google" category. Yet, after restarting Firefox with add-ons turned off, the issue disappears. I can't eliminate all possibilities (including coincidence), but I suspect malware might be involved. I experienced something similar recently. It turned out the cause was the Ace media player plugin.

Is this a plugin or an add-on? Plugins shouldn’t handle this kind of functionality—they’re meant to be click-to-run and only added when explicitly requested by a page. I don’t see the exact version I’m thinking of, but if it’s definitely something else, I’ll look into it more closely.

Everyone usually doesn’t understand the distinction (though the terms are similar in meaning). It seems I’ll have to test the addons individually.
