I need help fixing my son's Gigabyte G5 KD laptop. His fans are always spinning fast, making lots of hot air come out, and his computer is hovering around 80 to 90 degrees Celsius when he does nothing, but goes up to over 100C while playing games. I sprayed some air into the vents, but no dust came out. The game FPS numbers are way too high; even on low settings in Fortnite, it's jumping all over the place and going down to about 20 FPS sometimes. It looks like his GPU needs thermal paste, right? Before I take him apart and re-paste, does anyone have other troubleshooting tips that I might have missed? In the screenshots below, besides the high temperatures, one thing stands out is how the GPU memory clock frequency moves around a lot during testing. Shouldn't the GPU memory clock stay at 100% during those tests instead of going up and down like this?
Reused an old account just so I could share some thoughts... My old laptop is still here too, and lately I've had the exact same issue. Honestly, I'm not 100% sure what's going on, but your graph looks exactly like what I see there. The graphics card memory speed is stuck around 7000MHz for a long time at the start of the test (before any work happens), but then it suddenly drops and jumps back up between 800MHz and 900MHz all over again. I think this is just getting too hot and slowing down, even though I tried cooling it down or lowering the memory speed to fix it and nothing worked. Hopefully that helped someone out!
I just fixed my CPU and GPU. Temps are a bit cooler now, but Fortnite and Apex still feel terrible on his PC. It drops way down to 20 FPS even on low settings. His machine should work much better than that. I wiped everything clean with Windows, drivers (including the NVIDIA ones), and updated the BIOS too.
I just tried lowering the voltage on my processor by .80 volts, but nothing changed. The heat is still at a dangerous 100 degrees Celsius and games are playing very poorly.
Did you clear out the vents before sticking them back together? Make sure to check both the fans and the radiator, too!
I tried putting two cents in by reactivating an old account. My computer has been giving me trouble lately with the same issue. Honestly, not sure if it's true, but your 3DMark graph shows what I'm seeing. The GPU memory is stuck around 7000MHz right at the start of the test (when nothing is happening), then suddenly jumps between 7000 and 800 MHz after that. I think this happens because my laptop gets too hot, but even if I try to cool it down or slow down the memory clock speed, nothing stops it from changing like that. Good luck figuring it out!
