The system runs at 7-7700K with an ASUS Z390-P and Crucial P5 Plus 1 TB SSD. Placing the NVMe Gen 4 SSD in a Hyper M.2 x16 Gen 4 card would provide the listed speeds, assuming the PCIe x16 slot isn't occupied.

CPU and MOBO set the PCIe performance standards. The 9th generation was restricted to PCIe version 3. Only the 11th generation on z590 or AMD x570 cards fully backed PCIe version 4. AM5 has transitioned to Gen 5, along with Intel 12th, 13th, and 14th series chips.

According to the guide, the Hyper M.2 x 16 setup matches the x8+x4+x4 specification, so I considered it might be possible.

These M.2 adapter cards seem quite basic. They lack internal logic and simply convert the standard PCIe slot into an M.2 form. This limits them to the maximum number of lanes the SSD supports and restricts their output to what the motherboard or SSD can provide. The Gen 4 rating mainly highlights their improved signal integrity design for higher generation requirements. There are more advanced models available, but they’re expensive and mainly practical in large data centers. For context, a single chip without the rest of the card would be priced similarly to a 7600X processor, a motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM.
