HTC Vive with a 960Hz refresh rate
It's a good idea to check compatibility before buying. Your GTX 960 4GB SSC should work with the Vive, but performance may vary. Since you tested it on Steam and it was mid-range, results could differ. Consider confirming directly with the developers or community for accuracy.
It's a bit mixed. I suggest starting with a Pascal GPU like the GTX 1060, but given today's prices it could be tough to find one at a good rate. I’d go for the Vive instead, then wait and see if prices come down soon.
some titles will work okay others might struggle below 90fps (that speed is important to avoid motion sickness) so you could experience headaches or discomfort after playing them, possibly feeling unwell or uneasy during or shortly after. i don’t think you’ll be able to enjoy Arizona sunshine or fallout 4, but games like The Lab or smaller wave-based shooters should run well as long as there aren’t too many enemies on screen. my monitor is a 390 and that’s a bit better than a 970 (both meet minimum requirements) and most games function normally, though i’ll notice occasional fps drops. honestly, i’d have waited for the vive pro since it promises improvement and having the right strap makes a big difference—solo headphones can be annoying with the cord and the strap doesn’t stay secure, sometimes it feels loose even though it shouldn’t.
Expectations will differ, but your setup isn't ideal with the 960 4GB GPU. It doesn't seem like a fair mid-range choice, especially given the quality of those who produce these products! A 1060 6GB model would be a more logical starting point for the Vive.
It would work well on an Oculus Rift thanks to ASW. However, it won't be a great experience with a Vive, though some lighter titles should still function.
It's a reasonable temporary option until prices drop for Pascal GPUs. You won't be able to run everything, but you'll still be able to play many games at lower settings.
