I'm working with a brand new HP ZBook G8 15.6 2022 equipped with an Nvidia T1200 graphics card. When I attempt to set the resolution to 1920x1080 instead of the suggested 1600x1050, I encounter black bars on the top and bottom of my external displays. I use three Samsung monitors (S24E650 and two S24C650) connected via DVI cables to a HP G5 dock. Two screens are linked through DVI to DisplayPort adapters, and one is connected via a DVI to HDMI adapter. I've updated the graphics card drivers to the latest version, but when checking the Nvidia control panel, I can only access 3D settings—not display options. I need to verify my DP bandwidth specifications again. A single DP-alt-mode USB-C port (two lanes) may not support three monitors. Some adapters provide two such ports but will disable USB 3.0 connections. Another option is a 1920x1200 monitor, which should show black bars when pushing 1080p.

The little HP docks seem to rely more on the USB connection than a DP alt mode, acting like a simple display setup. In my experience, the black bars often appear because there are mismatched settings between the monitor resolution and the drive's output. Typically, the display sends a full 1920x1080 signal, but only receives 1200x1080, forcing the device to show black bars. Adjusting these parameters usually involves navigating through Device Manager, which can be tricky to locate.

Footnotes indicate this is DP-alt mode.
