I manage a few budget-friendly virtual machines along with AD, DHCP, fileserver and media server. Everything functions smoothly! With about 15 devices, it's not a lot but ideal for a home setup.

I’d just convert it into a small Linux system with Ubuntu as the desktop environment.

Actually its a real quick domain server ... for 12 PCs so if you have a small business or charitable organisation then this is a really cost effective way to deploy a domain server!

For setting up a DNS server at home, it's not very feasible. A more viable option would be using a Squid server. This could be really helpful if your internet service provider charges by the gigabyte.

He mentioned before it's for a small business. There isn't any setup to be fair, it's pretty straight forward.

He never mentioned using it beyond home purposes in his overview. In my view, it could be an excellent tool for him to explore Linux since he’s mostly used Windows. I’d install Ubuntu or Linux Mint and just use it for experimenting. It might even work well as a dedicated Linux machine at his desk for handling personal data.
