You're considering whether a 10/100 port setup on a ProCurve 2650 will outperform a budget 1Gb switch. The short answer is yes, it should. The 2650 offers more ports and higher speeds, making it better suited for modern networking needs compared to older TP-Link models.

...no? Depends on your use case. If your internet plan is <=100Mb/s then you won't see any performance loss. If you ever plan on moving files between local machines you'll be very limited (12.5MB/s instead of 125MB/s - max theoretical). Assuming the switch will come with no installed config you won't have much reason to set one up unless you want to setup VLANs, Link Aggregation, Port access rules, etc.

Absolutely, I don’t use local streaming or file sharing. My connection is a 100 megabit cable (Spectrum). We mainly watch Netflix, Hulu, Prime, YouTube, Fortnite, and Destiny 2. I think Blizzard is messing with the servers now because my load times are terrible, and I haven’t made any changes since I started playing. This is mostly to keep my son’s PC off Wi-Fi so he doesn’t complain about lag while playing Fortnite. Thanks for the reply.

You can locate affordable HP Procurve (pre-Aruba) networking gear with every gigabit port available on eBay. For instance, most items are over six years old, so verify their power usage since they may draw around 100 watts.

The greater focus on such games is not about the amount of data but about response time. A wired link can make a noticeable difference in practice.

Thanks for the updates. I decided to stop the order, got a Wi-Fi printer, and assigned my son to the port the previous printer used on my router. He still complains about lag, especially during intense moments like Fortnite team battles—often taking 5 to 10 minutes to respawn. I suspect it might be his computer. It’s an older HP desktop with an AMD A6 processor and 8 GB of RAM, which I upgraded with a Radeon HD 6750. I also had a GTX 560 Ti for him, but it had some weird glitches making his scoped weapons blurry when zoomed. So yeah, he’s just going to have to adapt. Since I don’t have the budget for another one, I’m planning to build him a new one.
