I’m preparing for a fresh custom desktop and currently have an HP laptop with an SSD installed. Even though I’ve kept the traditional hard drive, I’m considering transferring the OS to an M.2 slot. I’m curious whether moving just the operating system would also bring along some of the included software like HP Support Assistant or if it would result in a custom Windows setup. I’d like to extract certain programs from the SSD and install them on the M.2 drive, ensuring everything works smoothly. I plan to use MiniTool Partition Wizard for this process. If anyone has advice, warnings, or alternative tools, please share.

It is highly advised to begin anew in the updated system. Make sure to save all necessary data.

You mean returning to basics. Getting a new version of Windows doesn’t make sense since the current one is already quite expensive.

I’d copy all your documents and programs onto a separate external storage device, then reinstall the Windows product key on your personal computer and reinstall everything from scratch, restoring your original files.

On laptops and similar prebuilt machines, the operating system is tied to the motherboard. It won’t start with a new motherboard.

Use the MiniTool partition wizard to move your OS to a M.2 drive. This tool copies every system partition needed—like the reserved system area and EFI partition—as well as all programs and settings to the new drive.
