HP Laptop Power issues
Laptop model: HP 15-ay039wm 6100u i3, 8 GB of RAM and a 5400 RPM hard drive. Told it wouldn’t power on. I checked the battery—it was removable and one latch wasn’t locked. After securing it, it started but displayed a black screen. It seemed to be running a Windows update. The machine won’t charge when booted into Windows; it just reports the battery is very low (about 1%). I left it off and plugged it in, which charged the battery above 90%. Left it on for 1 to 1.5 hours. When turned off, the indicator near the barrel jack lit up orange. On power-up, the light went white and might flash or stay steady. It won’t turn on at all when unplugged. I took off the bottom cover and looked inside. The barrel jack had several small pins in the middle—it didn’t look secure. I couldn’t get a clear photo. It seems this isn’t a critical issue. If it works, it’s probably a charging or barrel-jack problem.
Consider restoring from a fresh installation. If that fails, attempt the process on a live Linux system. The issue likely involves Windows power settings.
Attempted Ubutnu again and received the same outcome. Ubuntu verified that the battery was indeed draining while the system was powered on. I turned it on from the login screen, and it shut down before charging. This seems unusual. I’m curious if it charges when it’s off or in sleep mode.
I might have discovered something you can attempt. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-H...e#M3143496 A user reported it resolved the same problem for them.
I plan to test it tomorrow but the system doesn't show it's connected in Windows or Linux. The only clue is the light near the power port. My sister mentioned it would turn off even when plugged in. Now that it was undergoing a Windows update, it might have restarted on its own after getting stuck on a black screen during startup until I rebooted it several times and it completed the update. For my sister and tech, a black screen without booting to Windows could mean it won't turn on. We'll find out.
Check the BIOS settings for power management and charging choices. If the issue stems from a malfunction in advanced power management (ACPI) functions, you might be able to turn it off.
The instructions on HP's website seemed incomplete and basic, with no ACPI details. The only charging choice was showing an estimated battery life. Since my sister uses another HP laptop, the chargers might work, but I won’t know until I check closer to the time. Thank you for your help and suggestions—it means a lot.
