My HP Laptop was updating on reboot and froze. Then entered a boot loop to the HP logo screen. I have gone thru all the recovery options and none of them work. When I go thru diagnostics it says "Hard Drive/SSD SMART Check : SOFTWARE ERROR. Do I have any options? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey, can I tell you what kind of laptop it is? Is that hard drive a regular one or a fast one? And just how old is this thing when it comes to its storage unit?

The Model 15-CW1 laptop has been around for two years and comes with an SSD drive.

Have you lost your laptop's warranty? If it has, the storage drives usually break down pretty much when the guarantee ends. This often happens because of work-related taxes and stress on the machines.

The warranty is done. Maybe you didn't finish updating your system, which made the repair impossible?

It sounds cool when a computer says something went wrong with its software instead of its hard drive.

Likely a bad hard drive. Fix it first, then swap it out for a new one.

It just says that a software error happened, but nothing else is showing up.

What should I do to find my Windows key when I cannot reach the BIOS and there is no label on the computer?

This old laptop used to work perfectly with Win 10 and had its license already done. If that was true, you don't need a special key anymore. Just download the installer. When it comes back online later, it will figure out the activation on its own. How To - Windows 10 clean install tutorial If you want the guide for turning Windows into an upgrade to 11, look there: Windows 11 Clean install tutorial (Click here) If you didn't find that link above, welcome to the guide for making a fresh setup of Windows 10 on your machine.
