I acquired an HP Elitedesk 800 G2 Mini from Facebook Market Place to serve as a backup server or streaming desktop for my TV. At $150 it appeared to be a solid offer since I didn’t need to purchase Synology DS418 and run my IronWolf drives continuously. I brought along an Intel i5-6500T which should handle everything I require, though I was browsing eBay and found several solid 6 or 8 core options with FCLGA1151 sockets. It’s uncertain whether using unsupported six-core chips would work in the HP Elitedesk. If it supports Intel FCLGA1151, can I use processors not listed by HP (such as i5-9500T, i5-9500, etc.)? I also considered other models like i5-8500, i5-8600, i5-8400, i7-9700, i9-9900, and i9-9900T.

You’re limited to a 7th generation CPU only. The 8th and 9th gen units share the same socket but require a different chipset, making them incompatible. For your project, it doesn’t seem necessary to upgrade further since the 6500t still works well.
