HP does not offer CPUs that are locked to its vendor.
Hi, I'm looking to purchase used components for a new PC build. Someone nearby is offering a R5 4600g from an old HP prebuilt machine at a great price. I'm a bit concerned about vendors like Lenovo possibly restricting the CPU to their boards. Should HP have done something similar with their prebuilt models, or is it safe to proceed?
It should work fine; I haven't encountered that as a consumer feature before. I swapped in a 3700X from an HP machine at work for use in a Proxmox box—since it was a bit too much for an office PC. I replaced it with a 2200G, and neither system has experienced any CPU shuffle issues.
