How/should I overclock
How/should I overclock
Hello everyone, in my setup I have:
Intel® Core i7-5930K (6 cores, 15MB Cache, Overclocked up to 3.9 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
My concern is how to make the most of the turbo boost (presumably overclocking) and whether it’s necessary for most games. Also, I have a GTX 980 dedicated to the processor. Would this significantly affect performance or would it be better to share it among my other two 980s?
Usually the turbo boost is set to default. Just open the BIOS and turn it on. Intel processors offer settings that adapt the CPU clock speed based on workload, so it might not always run at a fixed speed like 3.3GHz. If you’re not experiencing noticeable slowdown or poor performance, there’s no strong reason to overclock, but since this is the K version, you still have the choice.

normally the turbo boost should be active by default. just open the BIOS and turn it on. intel processors offer settings that adapt the cpu clock speed based on workload, so it might not always run at a fixed speed like 3.3gHz. if you notice no significant slowdown or poor performance, there’s no need to overclock unless you specifically want it. since this is the K version of the CPU, you still have the choice. if you intend to overclock, you’ll need a better fan than the standard one. thanks for your quick response. could you clarify how to enable bios settings in simple terms? i’m new to computers and mostly play on consoles.
Keep pressing the f2 key during startup from a cold state (complete power-off)

normally the turbo boost should be on by default. all you do is go into the BIOS and enable it. intel chips have options where depending on how much your computer is doing it will adjust the clock speed of your CPU so it may not run at for example 3.3gHz all the time. if your not getting any real slowdown or bad performance then i do not see any reason for you to overclock but it is the K version of that CPU so you do have the option
if you do plan to overclock then you really need to get something better then the stock CPU fan
Thanks for the fast reply. Could you explain to me how to go into the bios to make sure it is enabled? I am pretty new to computers (played on consoles most my life)
depends on your computer/motherboard really. normally you just hit F1 or the ESC key when first starting the computer. if you are on windows 10 you can hold down the shift key while clicking on restart to get to a menu that will get you access to the BIOS
