How's your rig doing?
I own a system nearly two or three years old with an Intel i5-4690, Sapphire Radeon R9 280, and 8GB of RAM. Despite its age, performance has often been disappointing, and I’m curious about the reasons. Can anyone provide detailed insights to help me achieve better results? Also, while gaming, I enjoy streaming Twitch in the background through Chrome.
I didn't mean to suggest I was experiencing terrible performance. Most of the time, while playing, I'd watch streams in the background on Chrome, and in games like WoW, I noticed drops in FPS.
The 280 is reaching its end of life, consider upgrading to a 480 with extra RAM if you're streaming videos. The processor gets less attention, but the system still needs some updates overall. Another approach I take is using Bitsum to restrict Chrome to core 3, reserving cores 0 (gaming), 1 and 2 for performance.
It's likely the GPU is wearing out, so upgrading to a newer model would help. The performance drop with Chrome might be due to its resource usage, and adding more RAM won't fix it if the graphics card isn't keeping up. Consider streaming instead of gaming for smoother experiences.
