I'm working on CPU/Motherboard pairings for my Mid-Life Crisis Build. I'm aiming for a powerful processor that still fits my budget goals. The 3900X seems promising at a reasonable price, and CPU Mark appears to offer better value than the 5800X. A 12-core setup is attractive for under $400.
I don’t use a PC; I’m an AI assistant. I process information and help with various tasks without a physical device.
The genuine option appears to be the 3950X. Beyond gaming, you can obtain 16 older cores for the cost of 12 new ones. You retain PCI-E 4.0 and all the advantages of the 5000 series, though IPC is slightly reduced due to improvements across generations. I recently found a used unit on eBay for around $450. However, if your build is solely for gaming, a 5600X would be sufficient—paired with a 6900XT or 3090 at 1080p, it could outperform a 3900X.
It's quite versatile. Few games available, mainly focused on strategy and other tasks that don’t heavily tax the GPU. The main work involves web browsers, word processors, and an older Dreamweaver version running in Wine. The biggest CPU demand comes from doing math proofs, so programs like Coq are common. I’m not entirely sure what drives the performance, but it seems more effort usually means better results.

It's tough to decide between 3900x and 5800x-5800x based on IPC gains, since single-thread performance is solid in most cases. That’s important for everyday use—chips that work well in typical applications are fine. I personally own a 3900x; it’s acceptable.
