How can I transition my current Office 2016 Pro Plus setup to Office 2021 Pro Plus on Windows 11? This would involve using a retail version of Office 2021 Pro Plus: Office 2021 Pro Plus USB Flash for Installation, along with a product activation key card. I believe when you start the Office 2021 Pro Plus installation, the previous standalone Office copy is deleted (unless there are issues, in which case you may need to uninstall the old version and retry). The Windows 11 system uses a Microsoft-licensed account, not just a local user account, and the device appears in the Microsoft account. The old Office software isn’t visible there for some reason—likely because it was originally installed on a local user machine before upgrading via a Microsoft account. Are there any problems or considerations you should be aware of?

Usually, when upgrading software, the installer should detect old version and either rewrite the data, or uninstall old version, before installing new version.
In an instance, it doesn't detect the old version, you can manually uninstall the 2016 version and then install 2021 version. Or you can leave 2016 as is, and install 2021 version next to it. But with latter, the issue could be, that when e.g opening *.xml, the 2016 version launches, rather than 2021 version. So, better to uninstall 2016 beforehand.

A good response would note that understanding Microsoft documentation requires some skill, as the authors seem to be writing for a specialized audience. However, a Microsoft article confirmed that Office 2021 can remove the previous version before setting up itself. To ensure a smooth transition, it’s recommended to back up all Office 2016 files into a .pst file and then install Office 2021. Alternatively, one could uninstall Office 2016 first, then reinstall Office 2021, or manually reboot and uninstall Office 2016 if the new installation doesn’t succeed. Thanks for the advice!
