how to transfer windows 7
Hello, I own a Windows 7 PC that was pre-assembled without the license. I also have another PC and need to install Windows there. I was told you can move Windows between devices but I’m unsure how. Can I use a system image to transfer Windows to the new machine?
It varies. If your license comes from an OEM (such as Dell, HP, Acer, Lenovo) or a System Builder OEM (bought from retailers like Newegg and NCIX), and you purchase it through Retail (big stores like BestBuy), these are non-transferable. You receive a lower cost for the license, including no 90-day tech support from Microsoft and a basic setup. This restriction helps keep prices lower when builders assemble the computer. By the agreement, the system product key must be supplied to you. For Windows 8 and 10, with OEM licenses (from Dell, HP, etc.), the product key is embedded in the UEFI chip. When you reinstall, it activates automatically without needing a sticker. It also helps maintain cleaner systems by avoiding labels on the hardware. If your system was pre-built rather than assembled from parts, and the key wasn’t provided, it might suggest a pirated version. Are you certain it’s not included in the Windows 7 DVD? Only Retail licenses can be transferred between systems. Unless your new setup matches your current specs exactly, the system image may not function properly.
You can locate your Windows key by checking your device settings or searching for "Windows key" in the system tray. If you need further help, let me know!
You can't move it since you already have an OEM license. Even with the key, it won't work. Your activation code is tied to your motherboard. Likely, the product key is in the recovery disks, built into the Windows 7 installer. The installer or Windows activation will check if you're using an ASUS system. Are you a student? I'm asking because Microsoft offers great deals for students.
