Looking for guides on converting a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B into a router or server? I've got four people at home who might help, and you're aiming to cut costs by using your own device instead of renting one.

Using a Raspberry Pi as a router is unlikely to work, and running it as a server won’t solve the issue.

It's usually more cost-effective to get a used router instead of a Rasberry pi, since routers aren't suited for that kind of project.

Your leased router is likely a modem as well, which you couldn't swap in with a Raspberry Pi. If it's merely a router, you can use a Pi instead—just keep in mind its limited coverage. https://www.instructables.com/id/Use-Ras...As-Router/

It's unclear why it fails. One might wonder why a single Raspberry Pi isn't sufficient for such tasks. Clusters exist because they distribute workloads, but a single device often lacks the power or capacity needed.

On your router you usually need several Ethernet connections, strong Wi-Fi capable of supporting many devices quickly... and that’s not something a Pi is built for. It functions, but why bother when a real router isn’t much cheaper? Unless your main goal is understanding how things work.

As mentioned in the initial update, the costs for renting a router were discussed.

I believe it would be an enjoyable activity for me. It doesn’t need to completely swap out the router or feel like a minor task.
