How to Purchase a New Laptop
How to Purchase a New Laptop
Hi! I've spent years gaming but have no prior experience with computers. My college dorm is quite cramped, not even room for a proper desk, so I need a laptop to handle both my studies and gaming.
1. What is your budget?
We’re aiming for up to $2500 USD, though I’d prefer closer to $2200 USD if possible.
2. What size notebook are you thinking of?
15 inches or larger.
3. What screen resolution should I have?
2560x1440 or higher.
4. Do you require a portable or desktop laptop?
My current PC won’t fit, so I need a replacement.
5. How long should the battery last?
At least 4 hours.
6. Would you like to play games on your laptop? If yes, please list the titles and the settings you prefer (Low, Medium, High).
I enjoy many games and hope to try Starfield and Phantom Liberty with decent graphics, but I also play Red Dead 2 and Overwatch regularly.
7. What other tasks do you plan to perform on your laptop? (Photo/video editing, etc.)
I’ll need to run Adobe software like Photoshop or After Effects, plus modeling programs such as Blender and Maya. I can handle these on campus desktops too.
8. How much storage space do you require?
At least 512 GB, but more would be better.
9. If you have specific stores in mind, please share their links.
A place like Best Buy or MicroCenter would work, or any online shop could deliver it by early to mid August.
10. How long do you intend to keep the laptop?
Ideally for all four years of college.
11. What type of optical drive do you need? (DVD ROM/Writer, Bluray ROM/Writer, etc.)
None.
12. Which brands do you prefer and why?
My school prefers Dell, HP, or Lenovo, but as long as it supports Windows, that’s fine.
13. Where are you located?
It should be able to ship to or pick up in the USA or Canada.
14. Any other details you’d like to share?
For my field of study, I need a laptop meeting these specs:
Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7 processor
15” display
32GB RAM
512GB SSD storage
4GB video RAM
As an artist, I want good resolution and color accuracy.
Thanks for your assistance!
When you mention 4hrs I assume you're not suggesting intense gaming or heavy use, since a good GPU or CPU won't make that happen. A friend of mine acquired a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 Gen 8 laptop with AMD 7745HX/RTX 4070 after returning an Asus model that had issues, and she really enjoys it.
