How to Network thjs?
Each NIC requires its own subnet. Every PC with a 10 gig NIC should join the same subnet. Then connect SMB shares through that 10gbe network. For instance, a normal gigabit IP might be 192.168.1.1. All devices receive DHCP addresses from the router on this subnet. In Truenas, you must manually assign an IP to one of the 10gig NICs—say 10.10.1.10—and set the linked PC to 10.10.1.11. The remaining 10gig devices should be at 10.10.2.10 with their corresponding PC at 10.10.2.11. After that, mount the SMB shares on each PC accordingly. I have a direct fiber 10gig link between Truenas and a PC like this; it functions perfectly, which is a very common approach. You’ll find plenty of guidance online as well.
I saw that this change was suggested for this specific need. What other options exist to connect the internet to this switch? Only SFP? That seems unlikely. SFP is intended solely for PCs and servers. EDIT: From the manual: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/pages/vie...d=17498183 Extension Slots and Ports Four SFP+ cages, which support both 1.25 Gb SFP and 10 Gb SFP+ modules. One Gigabit Ethernet port is recommended for management (works with Auto MDI/X, allowing you to use either straight or crossover cables). The Ethernet port (ETH/BOOT) can also be used for network booting and recovery via Netinstall.
You already have the necessary hardware except for the switch, so you can follow your original idea as I mentioned earlier. It’s a bit less tidy from a wiring standpoint because each editing PC includes standard Ethernet LAN plus 10GB, while the NAS has three connections (LAN plus two 10GB links). This still works fine and isn’t unusual.
