Investigate your friend's setup. If it's a recent or altered version, it might not function properly later. Perform a clean OS installation for a fresh build. Same device, open the provided link.

One 2.5-inch hard disk
One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state storage unit/Intel Optane H10
Two units available: one 2.5" HDD and another M.2 2230/2280 SSD/Intel Optane H10
Thus, you possess a single 2.5" HDD along with an additional slot for an M.2 drive, compatible with the Samsung 970 EVO.
For cloning onto an NVMe device (970 EVO or equivalent)

I made a copy of the HDD onto the SSD. It still tries to start from the HDD. I changed the BIOS settings but kept the HDD checked. It's so slow that it must be loading from the HDD. I haven't taken it out because I want to keep the HDD inside the laptop. When I reach the Desktop, how can I identify which drive is being used for booting?

Before the first boot after the clone procedure, removing the previous drive is mandatory.
Modifying only the BIOS settings isn't sufficient.
That's why the sequence of instructions emphasizes "Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD. This is not optional."
Power down the system.
Physically detach the old HDD.
Verify if it starts up correctly.
If it doesn't, repeat the clone process, adhering precisely to the steps outlined.
