How to install Win95 on a Windows 7 laptop.
Hello once more. I’ve mentioned this before, but now I have some real materials and I’m seeking further assistance. Context: Earlier, in a distant world, I played a sci-fi title called Rendezvous with Rama, centered around contact with an alien ship beyond Earth’s orbit. It’s an excellent game, though it only functions on Windows 95. My brother gifted me an older HP laptop running Windows 7. I’d like to swap it for Windows 95 so I can install the game. The machine has all the necessary hardware, but I’m unsure how to upgrade. I bought a genuine Windows 95 CD, but when I tried to boot it, it wouldn’t work as expected. There’s nothing saved on the system—only Windows 7 remains. I just need to replace it with Windows 95. If anyone has experience with this process, your guidance would be greatly appreciated. Once the laptop is updated and the game is installed, that will be my sole purpose for using it. Yes, I really enjoyed the game. My equipment includes: the HP notebook, the Windows 95 CD-ROM, and the Rendezvous with Rama game disc. That’s all I have. Please let me know if you need anything else. The laptop is an HP Pavilion DV7-4165dx Entertainment Notebook. Thank you for your support. Take care and good luck.
Consider running Windows 95 in a virtual machine. You'll likely face almost no driver compatibility for your devices.
This appears to be an old DOS game from MyAbandonware. It should work well in DOSBox without needing Windows 95 installed. Make sure you're using the correct version if you meant something else by Rama.
The project is Rendezvous with Rama. I own two versions of the original CDs. My brother gave me his when he gifted me the laptop, creating a pair for us. I'm attempting to determine how to launch the game, regardless of whether it's on the laptop or my main PC. I assumed running it on Windows 95 would simplify things and make the process smoother. Clearly, that was an error. After following the links you shared, it becomes clear the game being discussed is Rama, not Rendezvous with Rama. The images linked appear to show a pixelated DOS version, while the actual game is a Windows title. The visuals and case design reference another title called Antara. I somehow ended up with Rama discs inside a Rendezvous with Rama CD case. Over the years spent traveling in the Air Force, I didn't realize this until now. I kept the game for years, hoping one day I could play it again. I've likely read the book several times already. Thank you for the helpful information and support. It's a relief to know there was a DOS version. Appreciate your kindness. Take care and good luck.
Newer hardware won't automatically support Win95. There are restrictions in the Win9x design that prevent handling very recent software. If it worked with Windows 7, Win9x might be a viable choice. Keep in mind... check out the 86box, as it could fit depending on the game's release time.
It might have been the updated version that was eventually rebranded to prevent mix-ups. The Wikipedia entry notes RAMA should also work on DOS, suggesting tools like DOSBox or 86Box could still be viable.
