It shouldn't damage your pendrive. Once you install the OS, you can simply remove it and use it normally.

Sure thing, it won't affect anything noticeable. It looks like a standard USB stick, just a larger one. I've done this many times on PC builds. Once finished, you can remove the files or format it as needed—it's just like using any other USB drive.

A solid choice available... maintaining a tidy front panel while still supporting DVD use is to purchase an external DVD burner when you can. Spending $20-30 makes a big difference—this keeps the device untouched (I appreciate the clean appearance) and it’s also portable for other locations. WIN WIN.

I haven’t used an optical drive in years. You can get image ISO files from any source you like and install them on a USB drive. There’s no need to buy something special—most things are already available online.
