So here is how it works: Col A holds the Date, Col B has the Amount, and Col C shows the numeric Month linked to the date. You can use =SUMIF(C:C, 11, B:B) to add up numbers only if Column C matches 11. If you want, you could also include a MONTH function to grab the month value directly instead of using dates.

Look at December. The total money coming in for that month is 700. But the total spending out is 300. If I want to put a formula there, should it show just the income of 700? Or do I need to add the expense of 300 to get 1000? You are saying you want both numbers right now. Maybe you mean "plus"? Are you ready to drag that cell down one row for each month? Do you know how to use Autosum in Excel? Can we talk about this?

Just make sure your Excel file sees that column as dates. Then open up a pivot table and let it count things for each month automatically. It will be super fast!

Sorry, no AND needed here. Let me fix that confusion. The picture just shows an example for what I need to ask. Actually, I've had more than four years of things tracked, with hundreds or even thousands of rows. The biggest trouble is when I want to know the total income OR total expense for a specific month. I have to manually click around and select every single row for that month. It's very annoying. Is there an easy way to make this easier? Can it just add up automatically? Did you mean =SUM(,)? No need at all because once I select the rows, the computer will show me a total right below them immediately... The main problem is exactly as described above.

Oh, I see what you mean! The column header says "date" but it's just showing numbers in a table. Why don't we switch to text? What a mess of a pivot table!

Yeah, that's a pivot table. It's an Excel trick that lets you make one sheet to add up all the other numbers. There are tons of blogs about it too. You just pick a time frame, like months, and use math functions to find out what happened.

=SUMIF takes Col C and checks if it equals 11. Then it adds the values from Col B. If you want, you can use a Month function to get the month number directly. Here is the link for the Month function: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/offi...ba0eba86e8

I might not get everything quite clear, but it sounds like you should use the formula for sums. I think for December you can put that formula in the spot next to "200" on the right side. That cell can add up either the income part of December or the expense part of December. Something like this: =SUM(F1:F26888)

It's really great for Google Excel, super simple even if you just spend some time learning the tricks. There are tons of free videos on YouTube to help you out.
